The Three Treatment Options For Cracked Tooth Syndrome

If your dentist informed you that your sore tooth is actually a symptom of a bigger issue known as cracked tooth syndrome and gave you a referral to a cosmetic dentist for treatment, then it is important for you to understand your treatment options. There are three different options that are commonly used for this dental issue, including:

  1. internal tooth core building

  2. external dental crown installation

  3. tooth removal and replacement with a dental implant

Below is some information about each of these options, so that when you go see a cosmetic dentist, you will have a better idea of your options and can ask relevant questions about your future treatment plan:

Internal Tooth Core Building

If your tooth does not have extensive damage yet from its cracking enamel, then a cosmetic dentist can inject a special bonding agent into the core of the tooth. The bonding agent glues your tooth back together along its internal surface.

If your tooth is significantly cracked, then a thin metal band can be installed around the tooth to hold it in place. However, if the tooth is too damaged to be bonded, then you will need to have a dental crown installed.

External Dental Crown Installation

For a tooth that has significant cracking or decay, a dental crown is a good option for treatment. With a crown, your natural tooth is sanded and shaped and then a permanent ceramic crown is custom made for you and glued into place with a very strong dental cement.

Tooth Removal and Replacement with a Dental Implant

If your tooth is too damaged to be treated with a dental crown, then your cosmetic dentist will recommend that you have the tooth extracted. Once your jaw and gums have healed from the extraction, then you can opt to have a dental implant installed.

Dental implants are comprised of two parts:

  • a titanium post

  • a ceramic crown

The titanium post is permanently installed into your jawbone and then a custom-made ceramic crown is glued onto the titanium post. The ceramic crown will feel just like the rest of your teeth and will be designed to look just like them as well.
