Use These 4 Tips For Dealing With Gum Pain Until You Can See A Dentist

Gum pain can be every bit as painful as pain from a tooth. If you are having pain, swelling, or redness in your gums and you are not yet able to see a dentist, you might think that there's nothing you can do.  Luckily, there are some at-home remedies you can try until you can visit a dental professional. Here are some ways to cope with your gum pain until you get to a local dentist.

Peroxide Rinses

Hydrogen peroxide has long been regarded as antibacterial substance, so rinsing with it will help kill bacteria in your mouth. This is important because your gum pain may very well be related to a bacterial infection of some kind. Rinsing out your mouth with peroxide every few hours is a good way to keep bacterial levels down. Just remember not to swallow the hydrogen peroxide, as it is not good to consume.

Swishing with Brine

Brine, or saltwater, can be another way for you to soothe gum pain you may be having. Fluid in your gums can cause swelling, and salt helps to draw out that fluid so that swelling and pain in your mouth can be reduced.  

Combine salt with water that is as hot as you can comfortably stand, and swish the mixture about in your mouth for a few minutes. Finally, spit out the brine.

Avoid Oil of Cloves

Oil of cloves, also called clove oil, is commonly used to ease pain from toothaches. However, if you happen to have some on hand, avoid using it to deal with gum pain. Clove oil may give you a burning sensation when it comes into contact with your sensitive gum tissues, which will make any pain worse.

Bags of Black and Chamomile Tea

Use the tea in your home to help soothe the pain in your gums. The tannins in black tea have anti-swelling properties, so soak a teabag with warm water as if you're making tea, and then put the warm teabag against your painful gums for as long as is comfortable.

Don't have black tea? Chamomile tea can also help. Chamomile has mild numbing properties and can reduce pain.
